For over twenty-five years, his work has focused on male sexual trauma, leading both regional and national initiatives in Canada. He was the founder and past Managing Director of Men & Healing, a collaborative mental health practice in Ottawa (menandhealing.ca). In 2025, he became its Director of Training.

In the U.S., Rick is a trainer on issues of male sexual trauma for 1in6, Inc., (the Zero Abuse Project). In this role, he has taught both health professionals and first responders on issues of masculinity and men’s trauma recovery, including across all branches of the U.S. Department of Defense.

His latest book, Men’s Road to Healing (2025), is a guide for men recovering from childhood trauma.  Already, it is being used as an educational template for recovery for the new American initiative StrongAfter.org. His other books include the co-authored guidebook Men & Healing (2009) and the Australian guidebook Foundations (2017), both widely used in structuring trauma recovery services.

Rick’s work has earned him several awards, including the Attorney General’s Award of Distinction, CAMH’s 150 Leading Canadians for Mental Health, and the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada (2024).
